Project Description: Our study will investigate net care and repair practises in households in southern Tanzania through a mix of qualitative research methods. This project will identify the attitude and intentions of different household members towards net care and repair, providing information that will allow BCC messages to be targeted more effectively (e.g persons responsible, timing of repair, value of care and repair etc) information on whether how and when people care for the repair their nets... Our study will investigate net care and repair practises in households in southern Tanzania through a mix of qualitative research methods. This project will identify the attitude and intentions of different household members towards net care and repair, providing information that will allow BCC messages to be targeted more effectively (e.g persons responsible, timing of repair, value of care and repair etc) information on whether how and when people care for the repair their nets will help NMCP to answer the question of how nets can last longer within households to reduce the necessity of frequent replacement strategies. The current NMCP BCC messaging strategy focuses on the value of nets, importance of sharing nets with others, appropriate use of nets, careful handling of nets (hanging, tucking,) and methods of net repair, but there is still an important gap between message and people’s actions. Results from this study will therefore advance the Tanzanian BCC strategy by identifying appropriate net owner determinants of net care and repair. This will provide an evidence base for targeted up to date BCC messaging that could extend the life and value of existing nets and sustain levels of LLIN ownership. In addition to behavioural strategies, more structural fixes such as the development and distribution of ‘net repair kits’ may potentially help to reduce immediate barriers to repair.
